It's not really which antivirus program is important, but which overall approach to malware is effective. I found that using the following seems to keep a tight control on malware:
Zone Alarm Firewall - latest version
McAfee Antivirus
The Cleaner (has a huge trojan database)
Ad-aware (does nice job on adware and spyware)
My gateway to the Internet is in Stealth Mode so I am not so exposed to port scans.
Another issue is to disable all services on your computer that are not in use. This is called system hardening.
Raising your knowledge and awareness of malware will be your best guide. I recently read a book called Malware by Ed skoudis. This book will blow you away. This guy is an expert from the SANS Institute and he offers a lot of useful advice.
